Solar panel installation in Moonee Ponds

A useful layout starts with sunlight and space

Look at each roof section

A chimney, roof window or neighbouring tree can change where panels fit. We look at the available roof sections and their shade, rather than treating the whole roof as clear space. Tell us about roof repairs or an extension before the layout is settled.

Match generation to your routine

Solar produces electricity during daylight. A home with daytime heating, cooling or appliance use has a different pattern from one that uses most power after work. Your usage history helps us assess the proposed system against that routine.

Plan the electrical equipment

The inverter turns electricity from the panels into power your home can use. The quote should identify it alongside the panels. If you are planning an electric car or later battery, discuss compatibility and any extra electrical work at the start.

Roof shade and heritage are separate checks

For a Moonee Ponds address, check any Heritage Overlay before choosing where the panels go. Council’s solar guidance distinguishes panels concealed from a street, other than a lane, or a public park from panels visible in those views. Confirm the permit requirements for your address and proposed layout with Council.

A concealed rear roof is not automatically a suitable solar roof. Trees, neighbouring buildings and roof features can shade it at different times of day. Ask which areas receive useful sunlight and how seasonal shade has been allowed for. Planning visibility and solar performance need to be considered together.

Moonee Valley City Council’s solar and heritage guidance explains the layout considerations. The overlay check is specific to your property; it does not apply to every home in the suburb.

Make the connection part of the proposal

Solar connects to your home’s electrical supply and the local electricity network. The connection approval can set conditions on how much unused electricity you send to the grid. That is an export limit, and it is different from the amount of electricity your panels can produce.

Ask who handles the connection application, which approval the quote assumes and whether any meter or switchboard work is included. Confirm the network for your address from your electricity bill; a suburb name alone should not determine the connection conditions in a quote.

The number of panels is only part of the decision. Compare the roof layout, inverter, predicted generation and your likely daytime use. Savings also depend on your electricity use and rates. Read the Australian Government’s connection guidance.

Compare the scope behind your solar price

The layout and assumptions

Ask for the proposed roof sections, panel and inverter details, shade allowance and generation estimate. Check which electricity usage and rates sit behind any savings estimate, including how much solar you are expected to use at home.

The installation inclusions

Check roof access, panel mounting, cabling, electrical work and any switchboard changes. The quote should make exclusions clear, including roof repairs or other work needed before installation. A site visit checks the details before a firm price.

The handover and next steps

Ask about the connection application, meter arrangements, monitoring setup and documents supplied after installation. Compare the equipment warranty terms and workmanship cover in writing, then discuss any plans for a later battery.

From assessment to a written plan

  1. 01

A call about your home. Tell us about your roof, electricity use and plans for solar.

  2. 02

A proposal you can review. We put the proposed system and price in writing, so you can see what is included.

  3. 03

A site visit before a firm price. If you want to continue, we check the installation details at your property and put any changes in writing.

Questions about solar installation

Can solar work if part of my roof is shaded?

Possibly, if other roof areas receive useful sunlight. Shade changes through the day and year, so a single photograph cannot establish the likely output. We assess the available roof sections and the proposed layout before choosing a system.

Can panels go on a garage instead of the main roof?

A garage roof can be considered, but it needs its own assessment of condition, usable space, sunlight and the cable route to your home. If a Heritage Overlay applies, check the visibility of that layout with Council as well.

How many panels should I install?

Start with your electricity use and the usable roof area. A larger system may produce more electricity, but the value to you depends on how much you use at home and the connection conditions for exporting the rest. The proposal should explain why its size suits your plans.

Will panels keep my home powered during a blackout?

A typical grid-connected solar system shuts down when the grid fails for safety. Backup needs suitable equipment and a design that specifies the circuits it can supply. Discuss that separately if it is part of your plans.

What should I send for a solar quote in Moonee Ponds?

Start with your address, a recent electricity bill and any available usage history. Mention roof repairs, known shade, a heritage overlay and planned electrical changes. Roof and switchboard photos can help the initial discussion; they do not replace a site assessment.

Can I plan for a battery later?

Yes, but ask how a later battery would connect to the proposed inverter and electrical setup. The phrase “battery ready” should be backed by specific compatibility and equipment details. Read our home battery storage information.
